A new view of heat wave dynamics and predictability over the eastern Mediterranean

چکیده

Abstract. Skillful forecasts of extreme weather events have a major socioeconomic relevance. Here, we compare two complementary approaches to diagnose the predictability weather: recent developments in dynamical systems theory and numerical ensemble forecasts. The former allows us define atmospheric configurations terms their persistence local dimension, which provides information on how atmosphere evolves from given state interest. These metrics may be used as proxies for intrinsic atmosphere, only depends atmosphere's properties. Ensemble provide practical partly performance model used. We focus heat waves affecting eastern Mediterranean. are identified using climatic stress index (CSI), was explicitly developed summer conditions this region differentiates between (upper decile) cool days (lower decile). Significant differences found groups both prediction perspectives. Specifically, show relatively stable flow characteristics (high predictability) but comparatively low (large spread error). For 500 hPa geopotential height fields, is lowest at event's onset decay. relate these results physical processes governing Mediterranean waves: adiabatic descent air parcels over geographical origin land prior wave. A detailed analysis mid-August 2010 record-breaking wave further insights into range different regional conducive waves. conclude that approach can useful complement conventional understanding dynamics

Dust–air pollution dynamics over the eastern Mediterranean

Interactions of desert dust and air pollution over the eastern Mediterranean (EM) have been studied, focusing on two distinct dust transport events on 22 and 28 September 2011. The atmospheric chemistry–climate model EMAC has been used at about 50 km grid spacing, applying an online dust emission scheme and calcium as a proxy for dust reactivity. EMAC includes a detailed tropospheric chemistry ...

The dynamics of the eastern Mediterranean and eastern Turkey

S U M M A R Y In this study we investigate the dynamics of the region that includes Greece, the Aegean Sea and Asia Minor. In a least-squares inversion we solve for a continuous strain rate field, and corresponding velocity field, that satisfies 872 GPS data. The estimate of the geodetic strain rate field provides constraints for our dynamic analysis. Next, we separately solve the depth integra...

Population dynamics of the Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius, 1798) in North-eastern Mediterranean Sea

Monthly sampling of speckled shrimp was conducted by bottom trawl in the Iskenderun Bay between November 2009 and October 2010. There was a linear relationship between carapace length and total length in males and females (TL = -0.112 + 0.2294*CL R2 = 0.8298, n = 327) for males, (TL = -0.3918 + 0.2731 * CL R2 = 0.8919, n = 457) for females, and (TL = -0.378 + 0.2684 * CL R2=0.8492, n=784) for t...
